Most everything you want to know

Q: How can I get ahold of the Campaign Guide and Modules?
They are now available on Kickstarter!

Q: How does this stand out from other mouse-based RPGs like Mausritter or Mouse Guard?

Unlike those systems which come with unique rule sets, Mice of Legend sticks to familiar D&D mechanics. That means you can dive into this adventure using the rules you already know and love.

Q: Can I play the modules without the mouse hook?
Absolutely! Since these adventures run on D&D mechanics, you can enjoy the storyline even without the mouse twist. The conversion tables in the Setting Guide make swapping between regular characters and mouse heroes a breeze.

Q: Can I create my own campaigns using the Setting Guide?
Yes, absolutely. The monster-animal conversion tables make this straightforward.

Q: Can I play this using 5e rules?
Yes! While designed for AD&D OE/OSRIC, the 5e playtesting has been overwhelmingly positive. Our Campaign Guide includes everything you need to convert on the fly.

Q: Will you ever make dedicated 5e versions of these modules?
Yes! We’re planning to create dedicated 5e versions for an even smoother experience when funding allows.

Q: Can I play these using a virtual system like Roll20?
Yes!  All of the maps are splendidly rendered in 4k in full color, making this easy to port to Roll20 (funding dependent).

Q: Does it support a variety of game styles?
Yes!  If your party is more into the role playing side of gaming, there are over 100 NPCs and dozens of sidequests.  If you prefer to play in a more straightforward, action oriented style, you can ignore the lore and still enjoy the modules.

Q: Why should I buy more modules?
Each module explores new locations and adds new custom monsters, new magic items, and spells.

Q: What if my players don’t want to role-play as mice?
That’s perfectly fine! The setting is designed to be flexible. The modules can easily be adapted to traditional D&D races and classes. The adventures, enemies, and challenges are compelling even without the “mouse” hook.

Q: What level are the modules designed for?
Module 1 starts characters at level 1, but the campaign gradually increases in difficulty, reaching higher levels with each new module. We also provide guidance for adjusting encounters to fit different party levels if needed.

Q: How much preparation time does it take to run these adventures?
Minimal! The Campaign Guide and modules are designed with DMs in mind, offering pre-generated characters, detailed maps, encounter tables, and easy-to-follow plot hooks. If you’re familiar with running D&D, you can dive into the campaign quickly.

Q: Are there opportunities for player-created content?
Yes! The Campaign Guide gives you plenty of room to add your own flavor to the world. With customizable animal monsters, flexible conversion tables, and dozens of NPCs and side quests, you can easily create your own adventures within the Mice of Legend universe.

Q: How long will it take to complete a module?
Each module offers approximately 3-5 sessions of playtime, depending on how much time your group spends on side quests and exploration. DMs can expand or condense the material to fit their group’s play style.

Q: Can we expect future content beyond the first 8 modules?

Definitely! We have big plans for the Mice of Legend world, including additional campaigns, expansions, and even new rule sets that will be compatible with the existing setting.

Q: Is there a way to get involved with playtesting?

Yes! If you back the project at certain tiers, you may be invited to join our playtesting groups via Discord and Reddit. We value community input and want to make sure that Mice of Legend is as fun and accessible as possible.

Q: Will there be additional support or resources for DMs?

Yes! Alongside the modules, we provide supplemental resources like cheat sheets for quick reference, additional lore to expand on, and printable tokens for easy tabletop use. Plus, you’ll have access to a community of other DMs running Mice of Legend adventures to share tips and ideas.

Q: How much does the mouse transformation impact gameplay?
The transformation adds a new layer of strategy and excitement without overcomplicating gameplay. You’ll experience challenges like navigating environments that are now massive, but your core D&D mechanics remain unchanged. It’s all about perspective and immersion!

Q: Is the mouse transformation permanent??

The transformation can be a temporary or permanent plot device, depending on how the DM wishes to run the campaign. Module 1 explains this as part of the narrative, but you have full control over how and when (or if) the characters return to their original forms.

Q: What makes the lore of Portal Lake so compelling?
Perils of Portal Lake is filled with ancient mysteries, lost artifacts, and hidden factions vying for power. The setting isn’t just about mouse-sized adventures—it’s a living world with deep backstories, politics, and consequences that go far beyond the transformation. Each module builds on the last, offering a rich, evolving narrative.

Q: Is this setting focused on combat or role-playing?
There’s a healthy balance! While there are plenty of unique combat encounters—especially when facing towering predators—the setting is also ripe for role-playing, exploration, and problem-solving. With over 100 NPCs and dozens of side quests, players who enjoy role-playing and storytelling will find plenty to engage with.

Q: Can I run this as a one-shot or a longer campaign?
Absolutely! While the modules are designed to tie into a larger narrative, each one can be played as a standalone adventure or a one-shot. If your group prefers longer campaigns, all eight modules can be strung together for an epic journey.

Q: How much does this campaign differ from traditional D&D in terms of pacing and challenge?
The pace and challenge can be adjusted to your party’s preferences. Some parts of the campaign may feel more survival-based, with tricky environmental challenges, while others feature classic dungeon crawls and combat. The mouse transformation adds a new layer of difficulty without slowing down the game.
